The 4 P’s for Mastering Public Speaking – #2 – POWER

The phrase “Knowledge is Power” has been attributed to Sir Francis Bacon who lived in the 1500-1600’s. Although there is argument as to whether or not he really said it, the phrase has stuck. Some may argue about it’s truth – you must take action to have real power – but first comes knowledge. The uber-successful charter school, KIPP Academy, stands for Knowledge is Power Program. What brings a society out of poverty and into economic success can be attributed to the quality of education – knowledge. I stand for the power of education, the power of knowledge and you should too.

In Mastering Public Speaking, the second P is POWER, translation:  Knowledge. Your knowledge of your topic should be never-ending.  In other words, continually research your topic. After all, you are the expert. You should have a thirst to know everything about it – the old, the new, the relevant. That means never stop learning about it.

Your knowledge is not limited to your topic either. You must also be knowledgeable about your audience and speaking skills. Your knowledge of your audience will assist you in customizing your presentation for them and secure your success. Your POWER will come from your knowledge of your topic, your audience, and speaking skills which provides the fuel for your presentations.

Your PASSION is the DRIVER and your POWER (Knowledge) is your FUEL.

Next:  PREPARATION. Once you have all the 4P’s working together, you will become a better and better speaker. The third P, PREPARATION, is your VEHICLE. You are getting ready to get on the race track, the highway, the country road, whatever visual you like best. You get to choose it! And your vehicle can be a hybrid or a ferrari – again your choice.  Have fun with it.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.

    1. Calvince says:

Well, being a good writer takes time and effort. You must dedicate the two and remain fully committed to it. You can start by writing just a paragraph. Let a close friend read it for you, allow the friend to assess its strength and weakness. Remember you don’t have to be perfect at once but if you are PASSIONATE about, you will certainly succeed.

        Great advice Calvince!

Knowing that you procrastinate a lot is the first step Timothy. Your desire to write well is important as well. Now you just need to select the topic you want to write about – that’s your next step!
